I adore Mako.

He has emotional problems, but, come on, he had nobody to lean on.
Bolin was raised BY Mako. Bolin was able to be taken care of and coddled, so he's able to be more care-free and lovey dovey. (He's also a major flirt, yet I never see critics get on his arse about that... ahem, anyways.)

Mako had nobody to help him. He helped Bolin.
Mako was the parent. (mama MAko!)

Of course he has emotion issues and scars from his past.
Bolin had the same problems (i.e. lost his parents) but at least Mako was there to comfort and raise him properly.

Do you get what I'm saying?

Mako loves Asami and Korra and Bolin. He cares for all three of them deeply, but again, horrible communication skills. He always has to be on the defense. It's been the way he survived this long, and I don't think it'll be easy for the defensive side to go away so quickly.

Mako is not a jerk for this reason.
